EDUCATION

The Synagogue schedules the following regular educational events:

- Bar-Mitzvah Club
- Bat-Mitzvah lessons / classes
- Rabbi’s Shiur

Bar-Mitzvah Classes

Families with boys coming up for Bar-Mitzvah may elect to chose a Bar-Mitzvah teacher of their own, or otherwise Rabbi Rubinfeld, or Baal-Koreh and Outreach Manager Ronnie Kowadlo are happy to teach. This can be arranged via initial contact with the Synagogue office, then subsequently with the person involved.

Irrespective of the Bar-Mitzvah teacher, whether outside or not, all boys are welcome to the Rabbi’s Bar-Mitzvah club, which enjoys great popularity for both its educational value, its camaraderie amongst the boys, and the Rabbi’s sense of humour and supper served.

For further details, please contact the Synagogue office on 9866 2255 or click here to send an email.

Bat-Mitzvah Classes
Bat-Mitzvah classes are conducted by Yehudit Kazatsky. Originally educated at Beth Rivkah College, Yehudit lived for a year in Israel, and subsequently graduated BA (Psychology major) and B. Teaching at Melbourne University.

Although a primary teacher by profession, Yehudit has a particular love for, and interest in, Jewish informal education. Her classes are greatly enjoyed by the girls, who also gain much by way of learning. The curriculum is partly fixed, and partly fluid, the latter taking into account particular girls’ expectations and goals. Topics include Jewish Festivals, famous Jewish women, Laws and customs of Shabbat , How to Run a Jewish home, Israel, Hebrew classes, and discussion classes including interactive activities and games.

This is then capped off by the annual Bat-Mitzvah ceremony, always a highlight of the MHC year, with its educational, cultural, and musical presentations, including speeches prepared by the girls on topics of their choice,  invariably attended by many hundreds of family, friends, and congregants.

Enquiries are best initially handled through the Synagogue office, although Yehudit is happy to handle enquiries also at hoodsbenny@bigpond.com

Rabbi's  Shiur
Each Tuesday evening, following the Bat-Mitzvah Club, the Rabbi holds a “shiur” for those members interested.  Sessions have become increasingly popular both again, as with the Bat-Mitzvah Club, for their educational and social benefits. Shiurim may cover a variety of topics, from issues regarding the Synagogue service, through discussions on Jewish ethics, Holydays, religious observances, Jewish literature etc.

All are welcome – no prior knowledge or expertise is required, but you can be sure of an enjoyable and interesting time, laced with the Rabbi’s humour and topped off with the Rebbitzen’s supper.

Please contact the Synagogue office on 9866 2255 or contact the Rabbi directly for details.

In addition, MHC periodically runs Lecture Series on a variety of interesting topics. Currently, the Lecture Series is in recess.
